Education, outreach, exhibitions

Here is a sampling of recent projects of the Washington Print foundation

artist workshops, banner project and Associate fellowship

This year we have supported Artist workshops, classes, and demonstrations to encourage the growth and understanding of various printmaking techniques and the artists that make them. The foundation provides supplies and artist honorariums. Many of the demos are free and open to the public during the many events at the Washington Printmakers Gallery.

In 2021, artists were selected to have their images printed on street banners that were hung throughout Georgetown. With the sponsorship from many donors this outreach took the idea of prints to the public in an outdoor setting.

The Foundation Associate Fellowship program will support an emerging artist for one year funding, mentorship, and a showcase for an artist to further their career in the visual arts at the Washington Printmakers Gallery. The fellow will also receive training in all aspects of running a gallery and gallery related tasks.

Peggy Doole National Small works Exhibition & Competition

The National Small Works Show brings prints and photos from across the nation to delight our audiences. This show is always juried by museum curators or other recognized art professionals who also select the show’s award winners. This will be the 27th annual exhibition to be held at the Washington Printmakers Gallery in the Book Hill neighborhood of Georgetown, Washington, DC.

This exhibit honors Peggy Doole (1934-2021), long-time resident of the metro D.C. area who avidly pursued the field of art history, sharing her love of art by giving lectures, sponsoring art exhibits, and leading tours at the inception of the Hirshhorn, in museums throughout Europe and the U.S. and finally for the school program at the National Gallery of Art for many years. Her post-graduate museum work led her to a focus on and special passion for printmaking that makes this honor a fitting tribute from her family

artist invitationals and excellence in printmaking

One of the highlights of the past year was an exhibition of Jessie Nebraska Gifford, Carving Color, East to West. Invitational Exhibits showcase nationally and internationally known printmakers or photographers who have established fine professional reputations in many of the known printmaking techniques, as well as lesser-known newer printmaking methods. Invitational artists have included Clare Romano, Hung Liu, Renee Stout, Lou Stovall, Jack Boul, Naul Ojeda, Helen Frederick and many others.

The Excellence in Printmaking Exhibit is an invitational recognizing MFA and BFA candidates from the greater Mid-Atlantic universities that have been selected by their professors. The foundation is hoping to revive this exhibition post-Covid.
